Roatan

Roatan is a part of the Bay Islands of Honduras, in the western Carribean. It's a bit of a pain to get to from the east coast of the U.S., with layover in Texas and Honduras, but the diving is quite good. I organized a trip in February 1992 with my family and about six good friends. We stayed at Anthony's Key Resort, an excellent family resort with way cool huts and lots of things to do, including dolphin swims, horseback riding, and a small nature preserve, Bailey's Key. If you stay there you want a hut out on the key, not on Roatan island itself - there are far fewer bugs there due to the sea breezes.

My trip to Roatan was only my second dive trip. While I did enjoy the diving, I doubt that I'd return, given the superior diving I've since found elsewhere.

18 2/18/92 Unnamed reef #2 77 0:54 N Very lush coral, Derek saw 4' nurse shark, big blue/black trigger, filefish, 18" trumpet, nice wall. Tons of fry all over.
19 2/18/92 Overheat reef 38 0:49 Y Very cool dive; lush coral, fans, lots of ravines. Big "toadfish?" making loud noise, octopus in cave network. Big crabs, misc shrimp.
20 2/19/92 West end wall 88 0:41 N Drift dive, big wall. Fed groupers, others fed spotted moray. Small 'cuda. Derek had trouble clearing. We came up on the wrong boat!. Beach picnic after dive.
21 2/19/92 Herbie's Fantasy 34 0:50 N Divemaster fed morays, wouldn't let us. Derek found great 2' scrawled filefish & giant puffer.
22 2/19/92 Half Moon Bay Wall 46 0:37 Y Others' 1st certified dive. Basket star, clouds of krill, big urchins, lots of bioluminescence. Derek congested, not diving.
23 2/20/92 Bear's Den 61 0:43 N Uninteresting dead cave. Nice big grouper followed us, big crab w/one claw.
